I gave my two older boys a couple of questions on what was said in the TV program and then found an article about Abdullah Ibn al-Mubaarak on the net, from islamweb.net. Unfortunately they haven't translated it into English.
The questions were: What did al-Mubaarak (Abdullah's father) say when he wished to punish his son, and what was Ibn al-Mubaarak's answer?
What are the good character traits he had, that were mentioned? How many were they?
The answers:
1. لئن وجدت كتبك لأحرقنها "If I find your books, I will burn them!"
وما علي من ذلك وهو في صدري "It doesn't matter to me, I know them by heart!"
2. He had 18 good traits as far as I could hear from the program, but in the article I could only find 17 (the 18th was "shiddah fee badanih"):
قد اجتمع جماعة من أصحاب ابن المبارك فقالوا: عدوا خصال ابن المبارك فقالوا: جمع العلم والفقه والأدب والنحو واللغة والزهد والشجاعة والشعر والفصاحة وقيام الليل والعبادة والحج والغزو والفروسية وترك الكلام فيما لا يعنيه والإنصاف وقلة الخلاف على أصحابه
I managed to google this, where it says "shiddah fee ra'yih" and also "wara3":
((جمع العلم والفقه , والأدب والنحو واللغة والزهد , والشجاعة والشعر والفصاحة , والورع والإنصاف وقيام الليل , والعبادة والحج والغزو والفروسية , وترك الكلام فيما لا يعنيه , والشدّة في رأيه وقلّة الخلاف على أصحابه ))
If anyone has the original wording, please enlighten us, jazaakum Allah khayran.

قال الحسن عيسى : اجتمع أصحاب الحديث فقالوا : تعالوا حتى نعد خصال ابن المبارك من أبواب الخير ، فقالوا : جمع العلم ، والفقه والأدب ، والنحو ، واللغة ، والزهد ، والشعر ، والفصاحة ، والورع والانصاف ، وقيام الليل والعبادة ، والحج والغزو ، والشجاعة والفروسية ، والشدة في بدنه ، وترك الكلام فيما لا يعنيه ، وقلة الخلاف على أصحابه
This week we will be reading some tafseer of surat al-Qalam and continue reading biographies and history, inshaa Allah. Boys #2 & 3 will probably read about the big cats (as usual), gorillas and dinosaurs, inshaa Allah.
