Home made vapour rub - an alternative to Vicks

2 tablespoons olive oil or other carrier oil
10 or more drops eucalyptus essential oil

Petroleum jelly, petrolatum or soft paraffin dosn't have any scientifically proved medicinal effect, but should not be applied to the inside of the nose due to the risk of lipid pneumonia. Vicks also contains camphor, which is toxic if swallowed or absorbed into the body.

In any case, this is a much cheaper alternative to vicks. To make a salve, one can experiment with beeswax, for a natural substitute.

Asalamualaikum wa rahmatullah,
I will be trying this inshAllah. I always love the idea of natural alternative but never know what really would work and when teh kids are ill it's easier to just use tried and tested branded medication. Jazakallahkhair for passing this on.

Assalaamu Alaykum. Alhamdulillaah - jazakillah khayr for sharing this. I've been looking into homemade products recently - toothpaste, deodorant, moisturizers etc.

Assalamu aleikum sisters :)

I've tried bicarbonate as toothpaste (yuck! in my humble opinion - very salty).

I use bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) with water as deodorant since several years now, mashaa Allah. Works well (although I found it a bit smelly just after application when I was pregnant, but the smell soon disappears).

For moisterisers I use olive oil or argan oil (my sister sells argan oil).
